Wong Kar Wai

Wong’s works embody the traits of “film auteur”, breaking through traditional mode of narrative and destroy conventional cinematographic rules.

As Tears Go By was Wong’s debut at the age of 30. Its unique text and stylization of images had begun to take shape. His later film Days of Being Wild formally unveiled Wong’s aesthetics. The film therefore won 5 awards including the Best Film Award and the Best Director Award at the 10^th Hong Kong Film Awards, the Best Director Award at the 28^th Golden Horse Awards as well as the Best Director Award at the 36^th Asian Pacific Film Festival.

In the 1990s, Wong’s Chungking Express garnered the Best Film Award and Best Director Award at the 14^th Hong Kong Film Awards. Happy Together attracted wide attention from Cannes and won the Best Director Award at the 50^th Cannes International Film Festival. Wong thus became the first Chinese filmmaker who had ever won the award. In the Mood for Love won the Technical Grand Prize and made Tony Leung Chiu Wai ascend the throne of the Best Actor at Cannes.

Wong’s later films, 2046 and The Grandmaster, showcased similar inner emotional cores with a more innovative and variable perspective. They explored the most truthful and complicated emotions between people and people, people and objects as well as people and nature.

Zhang Zhen

Zhang Zhen, professor of Film Department, School of Arts of New York University (teach part-time with Department of History and Department of East Asia Study) and doctorate advisor. She was born in Shanghai, majored in journalism in Fudan University at the beginning of 1980s, and then went to Sweden, Japan and United States to study. In 1991, she was awarded Bachelor of Arts in Humanity with Temple University (Tokyo Campus), Master in Comparative Literature with Iowa State University of United States in 1993, and Doctorate in East Asian Civilization, Languages and Film Philosophy in 1998. Her doctoral thesis won the Best Paper Award of Society for Cinema and Media Study (SCMS). After conducting post-doctoral research and teaching for one year with Stanford University, She began to teach with New York University from 1999, and was granted the tenure professorship in 2005. Her works include collection of poems Mansion in a Dream (published by Chunfeng Art and Literature Press); Romantic History on the Screen: Urban Culture and Shanghai Films; and complied Urban Generation: Chinese Films and Society at the Turn of the Century (published by Duke University Press).

Lyu Yue

Lyu Yue, a cinematographer born in Tianjin. He was interested in painting as a child, went to work in a suburban farm in Beijing after graduating from middle school, and was enrolled with the Department of Cinematography of Beijing Film Academy. He had studied and worked for many years in France during the middle and later period of 1980s, and systematically learned Western film production technology and film theories. In 1992, Lyu Le acted as the cinematographer in the film Painting Soul , which had new pursuit and breakthroughs in the aspects of character design and lighting, but neglected the consistency of styles which should be paid attention to after the scenes of film had been changed. In 1993, Lyu Le acted as the cinematographer of film To Live, the cinematographing of which pursued the randomness of lifestyle, the camera followed the storyline of the film and the application of lighting was close to the natural light. Such cinematographing similar to the Hollywood method in western countries reached perfect effect in this film. In 1995, Lyu Le cooperated with Zhang Yimou again to cinematograph in the film Shanghai Triad. Lyu Le won the Best Technology Award in Cannes International Film Festival and went to Hollywood by winning the nomination for Best Cinematographer of Oscar Statuettes. The Foliage was his first “overground film” in the real sense. In 2006, he shot the film Thirteen Princess Trees. In 2007 and 2008, he acted as the cinematographer successively in annual blockbusters, The Assembly and Red Cliff.

Lim Giong

Lim Giong, a famous film musician. His original name was Lin Zhifeng, born in 1964 in Zhanghua. In 1990, Lim Giong made his debut as a singer, and became famous for a song “Go Ahead”, when inviting Li Tianlu to participate in performing in the MTV for his album, he encountered Hsiao-Hsien Hou who visiting onsite, which leaded to the predestined relationship between Lim Giong and film. Hou immediately invited Lim Giong to play the role of young Li Tianlu in Puppet Master, which expanded the close relationship between Lim Giong and film. Except performing in films, Lim Giong continued his unique image of hot-blooded and special youth, and released his second album “Spring Wind Youth Brother”, and continued to experiment electronic music genre in his third album “Entertainment World”. Although Lim Giong and Hou began to cooperate from Puppet Master, but he began to create music for the films of Hou from Goodbye South, Goodbye, which was a film music creation combining the fruit of creation of numerous creators, and Lim Giong won Best Film Song Award of The 33^rd Golden Horse Awards by the theme song Self Destruction; the wild electronic music created for Millennium Mambo had won the Best Film Music of The 38^th Golden Horse Awards.

Ching-Song Liao

Ching-Song Liao was a famous film editor. He was born in Taipei in 1950. He graduated from the First Film Technician Training Class of Central Motion Picture Corporation in 1973, entered the Studio of Central Motion Picture Corporation as an editor in the next year, and directed his first film Be My Lovely Child Again. As a famous film editor in Taiwan, he has worked in editing work for about 30 years and edited more than 50 films. In 1980s, Liao edited films for many directors in Taiwan New Cinema such as Edward Yang, Hsiao-Hsien Hou and Yi Zhang, and was called as “Nanny” of Taiwan New Cinema; meanwhile he was one of the new directors of Taiwan Central Motion Picture Corporation commissioned, and was influenced by many directors of New Cinema period who had enlightened his editing method and ideas greatly. Liao had close cooperation with Hou; when acting as assistant editor in Central Film Corporation, Liao got to know Hou because of Army Mini Recreation and began the cooperative relationship of almost thirty years. During the career of film editing for approximately thirty years, he has experienced the period of Policy and Military Education Film of Central Motion Picture Corporation and the period of Taiwan New Cinema. He acted as the executive committee member of 38^th Golden Horse Awards and had been nominated for many times as Best Editing of Golden Horse Awards; in 2002 he was awarded the Best Taiwan Filmmaker Award of 39^th Golden Horse Awards.

Li Qiang

Li Qiang was a famous scriptwriter, who was born in Henan Province in 1968 and graduated from Department of Drama Literature, The Central Academy of Drama, and wrote his first play script Rich Dad and Poor Dad. On November 8, 2004, the urban play Hero of the Year was written by Li was screened. The film Peacock scripted by him in 2005 won the Silver Bear Award of 55^th Berlin International Film Festival. In 2006, he was nominated for the Best Editor of Taiwan Golden Horse Awards and Hong Kong Film Awards by the drama film The Postmodern Life of My Aunt. He acted as the scriptwriter for And the Spring Comes in 2007. In 2011 he acted as the scriptwriter for So Young , the film debut directed by Zhao Wei, and won the Best Adapted Screenplay of 50^th Taiwan Golden Horse Awards. In 2013 he entered the sub-list “Rich List of Editing Writers” of “2013 Eighth Rich List of Chinese Authors”. He won the Best Original Screenplay of The 24^th Golden Roosters and Hundred Flowers Film Festival by the film The Golden Era. His new scripted film There Is No Other Love, directed by Zhao Wei, has been started to shoot recently.

TANG Wei

Tang Wei, born in Zhejiang Province in 1979, was an actress of film and television in China. She was admitted into the bachelor program of Department of Director, Central Academy of Drama in 2000. In 2007 she acted as leading role in Lust, Caution directed by Ang Lee, which won the “Golden Lion Award” of Venice International Film Festival, and Tang Wei was known for her role Wang Jiazhi in this film, a female college student in the Republic of China. She was successfully“relieved from the ban” when she acted in the low-budget film Crossing Hennessy in 2010 which was screened in mainland China and she won the Best Actress Award of Chinese Film Media Awards. In 2011, by her role in the film Late Autumn, Tang Wei separately won the best actress award in more than ten selections such as Korea Baek Sang Arts Awards and Busan Film Critics Awards. Finding Mr. Right, starred by Tang Wei in 2013, broke the record of box office of Chinese urban love film and Tang Wei won the awards such as the 22^nd Shanghai Critics Award and Best Actress of Beijing College Student Film Festival by her role in this film. In 2014, Tang Wei starred in a biography film, The Golden Era, which reflected the life of Xiao Hong, a female writer in the Republic of China. In 2015, she participated to act in the Hollywood film Blackhat.
