Synopsis
It begins as the story of Ip Man, the legendary teacher of Bruce Lee and a master of the Wing Chun school of kungfu.
In 1936, China is experiencing political turbulence and the threat of division. Grandmaster Gong Baosen, the leader of the martial arts world of Northern China, arrives in Foshan. He had been to Foshan previously to initiate exchanges between the martial artists of the North and those of the South but this time he has come at the invitation of the Southern masters to hold a ceremony to celebrate his impending retirement. Master Gong’s daughter Gong Er also arrives in Foshan to witness her father step down. It is here where she encounters Ip Man.
Meanwhile, the ongoing Japanese occupation of the Northeast sets the stage for a betrayal that will shake Master Gong’s world. It will also cause Gong Er to make a decision that will change the course of her life……

WONG Kar-Wai is internationally renowned as an auteur for his visually unique, highly stylized work. AS TEARS GO BY, the first feature he directed became the base tone of his personal style. In 1994, WONG directed ASHES OF TIME interpreting the traditional Kung fu story through a prose style. Later, WONG has shown his extraordinary talents in CHUNGKING EXPRESS with his postmodern visual style. The film was a hit in many international film festivals.
In 1997, he was garnered as the Best Director at the 50th Cannes Film Festival for HAPPY TOGETHER and became the first Chinese recipient of this award. In the
MOOD FOR LOVE, starring by Tony LEUNG and Maggie CHEUNG, was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 53rd Cannes Film Festivals, and finally won the Technical
Grand Prize. Under decades of devotion to art, WONG made THE GRANDMASTER, fashioning a 1930s action saga into a refined piece of filmmaking(Variety). It was the opening film at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival.
