Synopsis
A small-town girl, Wenhan, carries her mother’s lifelong hope: to escape the small town and find the way to the big city by playing Pipa. But Wenhan, though dedicated to fulfilling this dream, does not believe in her mom. During their hard struggles, she secretly tries to find a new way out for herself…

ZHANG Hanyu, director and writer. She graduated from Media Arts Production at Emerson College. She has participated in the production of several independent shorts, and PIPA AND LIZARD is her debut short film as director.
Director's statement
Everyone’s life is a difficult struggle, especially women’s. To find the way out of the suffocation of society, everyone has to pay the price and makes sacrifices. These sacrifices are not only the pain we swallow, but sometimes they also devour the people around us. Is it worth it? This is the question every woman weighs and considers for their whole life. The question is imperfect but also makes us who we are.
