Synopsis
They do everything together : they read poetries, have breakfast, see friends, argue with each other, comfort each other, share their childhood and past memories. With imagination, they introspect in solitude and rest in intimacy. At the beginning of twenty years of the 21st century, the world seemed to be in a state of chaos and disorder, with individuals slipping into depression and confusion. The middle-aged intellectual couple engage in one long talk and try their best to express with words, although they might step into a greater unknown. However, expression and communication, imagination and poetry, are already the basis for something.
Su Qiqi
Su Qiqi is a film critic, Over the years, she has been working actively to promote Chinese independent cinema. She also co-produced the award winning titles including THE CLOUD IN HER ROOM (Rotterdam Golden Tiger) and A NEW OLD PLAY (Locarno Special Jury Award). TALKS OVERNIGHT is her directorial debut.
Director's statement
The film’s inception parallels with the anxiety-filled summer of 2021. I faced a personal conundrum that was almost the zeitgeist of the time. Social media was filled with self-help articles. The issue was simultaneously abstract and concrete, spiritual and bodily. After enduring an absolute low point, I suddenly had the determination to resist : To create is the only path of resistance. Finding the determination made the content and form of this project quickly emerge, as if they were already standing by. I knew I wanted to make a movie with a mixture of fiction and fact : factual on the inside, fictional on the outside. In other words, It comes entirely from my experience, but was made and presented as a feature film. It comes from a real place but inevitably ventures into the surreal, fusing daily lives with poetry and theatre, concepts and delusions.
