Right now, to start a more specific imagination about the future should be of great help to the creators that are still hesitating, hoping to feel the brilliance of cinema again.<\/p>\r\nWhereas in the past, these questions might be mere trivial matters, they grow ever more critical today. In the pre-Internet era, with its advanced video technology, cinema brought about a landscape and experience that transcends beyond the here and now, providing audiences with a window into other lives. However, in the wake of the information explosion, this very window provided by cinema is constantly being challenged. As a new generation of young viewers gradually acquires broader tastes, many choose to forgo the cinema. Not because of fluctuating levels of appreciation or production, but because the definition of 'viewing' seems to have quietly changed. Limits of time and space needed for a viewing experience have been broken down, and now an audience may view any content they desire at any time of their choosing. The community formed by viewing is increasingly virtual and online, and each viewer's needs have become more individualized rather than following the general trend.\r\n\r\nWhen the audiovisual aesthetics established by the cinema encounter this new method of viewership, the challenge to reshape cinema's appeal in the Generation Z era is self-evident, and pondering over this is necessary and inevitable. Driven by light-weight portable devices and the renewal of digital media, short short films not only opens up a space for creative attempts, but more importantly, they are now a participant in a multi-directional media environment that fervently drive the renewal of traditional film making. This year, we are honored to invite such guests as the independent jury of FIRST FRAME, main creators of the selected works, senior media practitioners, filmmakers, etc. to gather and share their viewpoints, as a collective effort to explore the annual trends in female frames.\r\n\r\nBased on this year's selection of films, we apply a set of diverse evaluation criteria to the distillation of annual trends from the cinematic landscape. And through conversations, a space for multi-dimensional discussion could be developed, that ranges from cinematic paradigms to mass cultural criticism.\r\n\r\nAmong all the eligible submissions from 2021, films that are by female directors and on female themes account for a total of 20%. This year, we witness an increase in this percentage, with such works rising to as high as 28%, a new breakthrough.\r\n\r\nIt could be seen from the growing numbers year by year that a different kind of vigor and liveliness is manifested in the spectrum of female images by these filmmakers. While the creation of these films is lacking in number and discipline, we should continue to raise and address questions of how to respond to the issue of self-identification; how to eliminate the binary opposition between sexes through taking on a more equal perspective; and how we should have more public discussions, in the spirit of rational thinking, on the text of female films as well as the creative prowess of women.
